SHOULD I CALL A BEEKEEPER OR PEST CONTROL PROFESSIONAL?
The answer to this question is all about identification. Beekeepers are a great resource when dealing with honey bees, but often times honey bees and yellow jackets are confused for one another. Before reaching out to a beekeeper make sure that the nest has not been contaminated by any sort of chemical. If that happens and they are in fact honey bees the beekeeper will not be able to save the honeybees. We suggest contacting Elite Pest and Termite Control to help identify the stinging insect first and if they turn out to be honey bees we can put you in contact with a local bee keeper who will be able to help you. Otherwise we are more than happy to help you with the removal of these insects from your property.

Honey Bee
Honey bees swarm together without making a nest or hive. They are important pollinators.
Carpenter Bee

Yellow Jacket

Stinging Insect: Nesting
Bald Face Hornets
Bald Faced Hornet nests are what most people think of when they think of any sort of stinging insect nest. The movies like to take full advantage of the way these look. They are massive and include many intricacies. They are typically found high up in trees or attached to the sides of homes and hanging from soffits. The good news is once the season for these pests has concluded (May-October) they will abandon the nest and it will not be reused again. If you find one of these near places you hang out around during their season and it looks to be active, call Elite Pest and Termite Control and we can come and remove the nest.
Mud Daubers
Mud Dauber nests are typically found around the outside of our homes attached to walls, under the eaves, and inside garages and other exterior buildings. These nests are made out of mud. Mud Daubers in general are not very dangerous, though they do sting. When abandoned, their nests are available as new homes for other insects and wasps that might take up residence in them when they are no longer in use. If you notice these empty nests around be sure to knock them down so they do not attract other insects to the area. Not sure if they have been abandoned? Look for holes in the nest. When the Mud Daubers leave their nest they come out, creating holes. While they are inside of their nest you will not see any holes. Call Elite Pest and Termite Control if you would like us to come and remove these nests.
Carpenter Bees
Carpenter Bees are often mistaken for bumble bees. The way to tell them apart is through their abdomens. Carpenter Bees have shiny black abdomens, and Bumble Bees have fuzzy yellow and black abdomens. Carpenter Bees are best known for the way they bore into wooden structures creating circular holes. They do not eat this wood, but they drill it out creating cavities that become their nest for their larvae. They are more apt to create holes and galleries in untreated clean wood. Keeping up on wood around your home and property may deter them, but it is not always the case. After their typical pest season (May-October) they will then use the holes for shelter and hibernate over the winter. It is best to treat for these insects throughout the year with their final treatment in the fall, at which time you are able to seal the holes that they had created. Call Elite Pest and Termite Control if you are dealing with Carpenter Bees and would like to set up a service.
Honey Bees
Honey Bee hives are typically found inside of holes within trees and other tree cavities, as well as under the edges of objects where they can easily come and go. They are often found near gardens. Bees are not always pests, in fact these are very beneficial creatures to our world. Due to their very nature we do not treat for them. We do however identify them if that is needed and will refer you out to a local beekeeper if it is needed for them to come and remove the hive and try to save the colony. Give Elite Pest and Termite Control a call to help in identifying the stinging insect you have issues with if you are unsure.
Ground Bees (Yellow Jackets, Bumble Bees, Mason Bees)
There actually is no such thing as a ground bee, this would be a misnomer for several different types of stinging insects. These insects would be Yellow Jackets, Bumble Bees, and Mason Bees. Their natural habitats are found within the ground. All three of these types of stinging insects will nest in the ground. However, Yellow Jackets will make their nests anywhere they feel that they can construct their nest in safety. If you are dealing with a type of “ground bee” give Elite Pest and Termite Control a call for proper identification and treatment.
Wasps
Wasps make their nests out of chewed wood which gives them a very paper like look. Wasp nests can be found most often under fascia and soffit. They also can be seen hanging under porches and decks including the railings. Wasps will make their nests anywhere they can feel safe. Wasps will not chase you unless they feel threatened. If you notice wasp nests around your property give Elite Pest and Termite Control a call to come and assess the situation. We can remove them safely and effectively.
