SIGNS OF BED BUG ACTIVITY

The presence of bed bug feces on mattresses, blood spots found on sheets, shed exoskeleton’s, and bites are some of the indications of a bed bug infestation. Bites are commonly found on the parts of the body that are more likely to be exposed to bed bugs during sleep – the hands, neck, face, shoulders, legs and arms. While not always true, bed bug bites can be together in groups of three in a small area and seen occurring in a line or a zig-zag pattern.

Eggs and Shed Casings

When bed bugs molt into their next life stage, they shed the old skin casings. Bed bug shed casings look like empty bed bug shells, only lighter. Bed bug eggs are smaller and are more difficult to see than feces or shed casings but can provide another sign of bed bug presence. Eggs are pearly white, found in small groupings, and are one millimeter long or roughly the size of a grain of rice.

DO HOME REMEDIES, ALCOHOL, OR STORE-BOUGHT CHEMICALS WORK?

Many people when discovering they have bed bugs try a variety of different treatment methods to get rid of their bed bug infestation. Unfortunately, these methods do not work on bed bugs. Diatomaceous Earth, natural oils, and or dryer sheets will not kill bed bugs in most cases. Many of the over-the-counter chemicals, foggers, or “bug bombs” listed to kill bed bugs will have no effect on them unless coming in direct contact with them and in heavy or dangerous doses. Finally, alcohol will not kill bed bugs either. So much alcohol must be used that the bed bugs are essentially being drowned and in this case the alcohol can pose as a serious fire hazard.

FAQ

When traveling, smooth, hard-cased luggage is recommended as bed bugs will have difficulty climbing the smooth surfaces and hiding in the lack of cracks and crevices. When staying in a hotel, always place your bag on a suitcase stand rather than on the bed or floor. Keep the rack away from walls or furniture so bed bugs cannot climb up the wall and onto the luggage. When returning home, wash the clothes from your trip and put them in a hot dryer. Before bringing new or used furniture into the home be sure to inspect them thoroughly. Look in seams, tufts and under cushions of furniture. Wash and dry any used clothing such as those found at thrift stores. If you believe you were in a place that could have had bed bugs or met someone that could possibly have had bed bugs, taking the clothes off you were wearing in the garage the putting them directly in the washer and dryer can help lower the possibility of infecting your home
